Gartree Hill Covert

A proper woodland walk just outside Melton Mowbray, Gartree Hill Covert is the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and wonder why you hadn't been before. It's a managed forest patch with decent paths threading through the trees - nothing dramatic, but solid countryside rambling territory.

The appeal here is straightforward. You get a mix of deciduous and conifer woodland, the kind of place where you can actually breathe and think. On a decent day the light filters through nicely, and there's enough space that you won't feel crowded even on weekends. It's the sort of walk that appeals to people who want fresh air without the faffing about - no fees, no visitor centre, just woods.

Allow an hour for a decent loop, longer if you're the type to stop and listen. Families with youngsters will find it manageable; older kids might find it a bit tame unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. Dog walkers tend to love it. Winter can be boggy in places, so spring through autumn is probably your sweet spot.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Eye Kettleby Lakes is practically on the doorstep, just over two miles away - this makes an excellent half-day outing before heading back for lunch. It's the kind of place that fills the gaps in a longer Leicestershire holiday without demanding much of your day. Don't expect dramatic views or heritage features. Just expect a proper woodland, good for clearing your head.
