Garreg Las

The walk up Garreg Las rewards you with proper views across Carmarthenshire, though the climb itself is steeper than you'd expect from looking at the map. It's a peak that sits near Llangadog, rising from moorland that changes colour with the seasons - purple in late summer when the heather's out, brown and bleak in winter. Most people tackle it as a half-day walk rather than a destination in itself, which is fair enough.

The summit isn't dramatic. There's no sudden reveal, no café, no visitor centre - just open moorland and the satisfaction of having gained some height. On clear days you can see towards the Brecon Beacons. Walkers will get the most from this one, particularly those who like rolling upland terrain rather than dramatic peaks. Families with younger children might find the exposed moorland a bit dull once they've reached the top, and there's not much shelter if weather turns.

It's free to access, though parking near the trailhead is basic. Allow two to three hours for a comfortable walk. If you're camping at Cosmos Camping or Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park - both excellent spots within a few miles - Garreg Las fits nicely into a broader walking itinerary around the area. Don't expect queues or facilities. Go for the walk itself, not the destination.
