Garple Loch

The water at Garple Loch sits absolutely still on a decent day, and you'll understand why locals bother making the drive out here from Castle Douglas. It's a small, quiet body of water in the Dumfries and Galloway hills - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll take your breath away, but genuinely peaceful in a way that feels increasingly rare.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. You get a proper walk around the loch edge, and the surrounding moorland gives you that open, rolling Scottish Lowlands feeling without the thumping tourist crowds. Birdwatchers absolutely rate it - you'll see ospreys and red kites if you're patient and arrive early. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own, but it works perfectly as a morning stop between bigger attractions, maybe an hour's walk and a sit-down with a flask.

The nearest base is Castle Douglas, where Loch Ken Holiday Park sits just six miles away - handy if you're doing a proper park holiday in the region. The two lochs complement each other nicely: Loch Ken's got more going on (water sports, restaurants), while Garple Loch gives you the quiet counterpoint. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's proper golden and you've got the place to yourself. Free access, naturally.
