Garn Fach

The walk up Garn Fach is short, sharp, and absolutely worth the effort. You're looking at roughly 40 minutes to the summit from the car park near Dolgellau - not a slog, but steep enough to get your heart going. The peak itself sits at around 600 metres, which means the views across the Cader Idris range and down the Mawddach Valley are proper special without requiring serious mountaineering credentials.

What makes it work is the payoff-to-effort ratio. You get genuine Welsh mountain scenery - rocky outcrops, heather moorland, that satisfying sense of being somewhere wild - without spending your whole day on the walk. It's ideal for families with older kids or anyone wanting to tick a peak without the commitment of something like Snowdon.

The approach is straightforward enough, though it's rough underfoot in places and can be boggy after rain. Pick a clear day if you can. Go in the morning to avoid the afternoon mist that often rolls in. From the nearby camping options - Graig Wen and Llwyn yr Helm both have excellent reviews and are only minutes away - you could easily combine this with exploring other Cader peaks or spending time in Dolgellau's pubs and independent shops.

It's free, naturally. Allow a couple of hours total if you're taking photos and enjoying the view rather than just bagging the summit. Real mountain, small commitment. That's the appeal.
