Garden Grove

Walk into Garden Grove and you're immediately surrounded by mature woodland that feels proper removed from the commuter belt, despite being just outside Royston. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and on a quiet day you could almost forget you're in Essex at all.

It's a woodland walk rather than a manicured garden, which means it appeals most to people who like a bit of rambling without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. Families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground will find it absorbing for an hour or two - there's something about trees and the occasional clearing that keeps children engaged longer than you'd expect. Older walkers tend to love it; it's accessible enough but gives the impression of genuine countryside exploration.

The main draw is simply the trees themselves - a proper mix of species that changes with the seasons. Autumn here is genuinely worth timing a visit for, when the whole wood turns bronze and gold. Spring brings bluebells if you're lucky with the timing. Summer can feel a bit humid and buggy, so perhaps not ideal for that season.

It won't consume your whole day, but it's the sort of place that refreshes you properly. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.
