Gallt y Vanor

The forest walk at Gallt y Vanor is a proper slice of Ceredigion woodland - the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left things behind. It's just outside Cardigan, close enough for a morning trip but remote enough to feel proper wild. The main trail takes you through dense forestry with streams running through, and the canopy gets thick enough that even on drizzly days it stays reasonably dry underfoot. You're looking at mixed woodland - oak, ash, birch - nothing particularly fancy but genuinely peaceful.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a stroll round a manicured park - the paths can be boggy after rain and there are proper inclines in places. Most people allow between ninety minutes and two hours for the full circuit, though you can easily do a shorter version if you've got restless kids in tow. The real draw is the quiet. You won't find crowds here, which means you might actually spot something - deer, buzzards, the occasional fox if you're lucky.

If you're based at one of the nearby camps - Happy Campers Family Park or Cardigan Camping both sit within easy striking distance - this works well as a half-day activity. Don't expect visitor facilities or a café. Bring a packed lunch, proper boots, and check the weather because the path gets slippery. It's free to access and there's basic parking. Worth adding to your itinerary if you want something off the usual tourist trail.
