Gallow Hill

The climb up Gallow Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're not paying attention. From Dunkeld, it's a proper lung-burner of a walk that rewards you with views across the Tay Valley that genuinely stop you in your tracks. The peak itself sits at around 700 metres, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Grampians.

This is one for walkers who want the satisfaction of a summit without committing to a full day in the hills. Allow yourself a couple of hours return from the car park - faster if you're fit, longer if you want to linger at the top and take in the scenery properly. The path is well-trodden and manageable for anyone with decent fitness, though it does get muddy in wet weather, so proper boots are non-negotiable.

Historically it's a brooding sort of place - the name hints at darker times - but these days it's simply a cracking vantage point. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the steep bits tedious. If you're staying at Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park or Erigmore just down the road, this makes a brilliant morning outing before the holiday parks get busy.

Go early to avoid crowds, and pick a day when visibility is decent - there's nothing worse than hauling yourself up a hill only to find yourself wrapped in cloud. The walk costs nothing and takes minimal planning, which is exactly what makes it worth doing.
