Gallangad Muir

The walk up Gallangad Muir rewards you with proper views across the Lowlands once you've put in the graft. It's not a massive peak - we're talking a solid couple of hours for most people - but the climb is steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned the vistas at the top. From the summit, you can see right across towards the Campsies and beyond, which on a clear day is absolutely worth the slog.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. Don't come expecting a stroll or a picnic spot with facilities. Come because you want fresh air, some genuine leg work, and to see the Scottish landscape roll out beneath you. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a push will manage it fine, but toddlers will hate you for it.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no charge - just the hill and your own two feet. Allow a good three hours there and back if you're not a regular hillwalker, less if you are. Early morning in autumn is when it's worth doing - the light hits differently and you'll avoid the summer crowds on the better-known Loch Lomond walks.

If you're based at Loch Lomond Retreat or one of the other parks scattered around the loch - and there are plenty within five miles - Gallangad Muir makes a proper day out. It's close enough to do from your glamping pod without a long drive, but different enough from the loch walks to give you variety. Not the most famous Lowland peak, but that's rather the point.
