Furze Hill

The walk up Furze Hill rewards you with proper Surrey views - rolling woodland and distant ridgelines that stretch toward the Weald. It's not a massive summit, but on a clear day you can stand at the top and genuinely feel like you've earned something. The approach from Guildford takes you through mixed woodland with bracken underfoot, and the paths are well-trodden without being overcrowded.

This is walker territory rather than a stroll-and-selfie spot. Most people spend 20 minutes on the summit, picking out landmarks, then head back down. It's the kind of place where families with kids aged eight-plus will have a decent time, though younger ones might find the climb a bit tedious without a proper reward at the end - there's no cafe, no facilities, just trees and views. Expect to be up and down in two hours from Guildford.

If you're staying at Chapel Farm Park or Wyldecrest Surrey Hills nearby, Furze Hill works perfectly as a morning outing before the weather turns. The woodland keeps things cooler on hot days, and you're close enough to town that you won't be travelling far. It's not dramatic like the Downs further south, but it's solid walking country and exactly what Surrey does well - intimate rather than showy. Worth the detour if you've got the time.
