Furze Croft

Walking into Furze Croft feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - all dense trees and dappled light, nothing manicured about it. This forest sits just outside Salisbury and is proper woodland rather than a manicured country estate, which is exactly why it works. You're not following colour-coded trails here; instead you're picking your way through bracken and between oaks, spotting what the woodland feels like rather than what it's been designed for you to see.

It's best suited to people who actually enjoy a ramble. Kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're the sort who'll spend hours turning over logs, but walkers and nature types will find it genuinely rewarding. The forest has that real English woodland character - a bit overgrown in places, proper roots underfoot, the smell of earth. Bring good boots.

There's no charge to visit and no formal opening hours, so you can turn up whenever suits. An hour is a decent amount of time to explore the main paths without rushing. If you're staying at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - only three and a half miles away - this is an easy afternoon escape. It's not flashy or famous, but that's rather the point. This is the sort of woodland walk that sticks with you more than the staged attractions do.
