The walk into Fulthorpe Glen takes you down through proper Durham woodland - steep sided and dark in places, with a burn running through the bottom that's genuinely pretty after rain. It's the kind of forest that feels untamed, with moss everywhere and enough fallen logs to keep kids scrambling about. You're looking at maybe forty minutes in and out if you're not stopping much, though you could easily sit by the water for longer.

This is walker territory rather than a casual stroll. The paths are uneven and muddy even when it hasn't rained recently, so proper boots are essential. It's not challenging enough to put off families with reasonably mobile children, but it will exhaust the under-fives if you're pushing a buggy. History buffs might appreciate that you're deep in industrial Durham landscape, though there's nothing obvious to see from that period.

The real draw is the sheer woodiness of it. From Stockton-on-Tees, you're only about twenty minutes away, making it a decent half-day option between longer days out. The glen itself is free to access, though there's no car park right at the entrance - roadside parking nearby is the reality.

Go when it's been dry for a few days. The mud here is serious business.
