Froyle Recreation Ground

You'll find yourself on a modest strip of managed grassland just outside Alton - the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet half-hour if you're walking nearby. Froyle Recreation Ground is basically a nature reserve with open meadow, light woodland fringe, and enough habitat to keep birdwatchers moderately interested. It's the kind of spot where a keen naturalist might spend a couple of hours with binoculars, though families with young kids will probably exhaust it in one go.

The ground works well as a breathing space if you're staying at Wigwam Holidays just down the road - five or six miles away - and fancy a proper walk rather than a paddock stomp. The meadow can be genuinely lovely in late spring when wildflowers come through, though it's hardly a destination in itself. Go early morning if you're after birds; late afternoon if you just want peace without the dog-walkers.

It's free, naturally, and you can access it during daylight hours year-round. Allow an hour maximum unless you're seriously into identifying species. The terrain is gentle - no steep bits, proper pushchair-friendly paths. Worth combining with a visit to Alton's town centre rather than standing alone as your day's entertainment.
