Friary Park

The walk into Friary Park catches you off guard. You're expecting something small - a local nature reserve near Elstree - but the moment you step past the entrance, the world gets properly quiet. Woodland closes in on both sides, and suddenly you're surrounded by the kind of green that makes you remember why you came to Hertfordshire in the first place.

It's a genuine nature reserve, not a manicured park with benches every fifty metres. The paths wind through mixed woodland and open spaces, and if you're into birdwatching or spotting wildflowers depending on the season, you'll actually see things here. The reserve isn't enormous - most people will cover the main trails in under two hours - but it feels generous with its space and doesn't feel crowded even when others are about.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get the most from it. Kids are fine if they're the sort who'll enjoy a proper ramble rather than demanding a playground every ten minutes. It's the kind of spot you'd visit as a morning outing rather than a full day, which works well alongside staying at Elstree Park or The Mimms Caravan Park - both within easy driving distance.

Bring decent footwear because it can get muddy, particularly after rain. The reserve is free to access, and there's no time restriction, so you can turn up when you fancy. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter, and the light's better for photography then too.
