Walk into Arch North in Elstree and you're confronted with walls that go up and up - ropes dangling, colored holds scattered everywhere, the smell of climbing chalk and sweat hanging in the air. It's an indoor climbing gym, and it takes itself seriously. Beginners get put through an induction (usually a one-off fee, though you'll want to check current rates before turning up), while regulars are clearly the backbone of the place, working through problems that would make most of us wince.

The space itself is well-designed - not cramped, good lighting, proper equipment. Routes span beginner to genuinely punishing difficulty levels. Kids can have a go if they're old enough and supervised, though it's less of a soft-play destination and more a proper training facility. Expect to spend an hour or two if you're serious about it; an afternoon feels right for a first visit.

Opening hours are weekday mornings from 10am through to late evening (10pm weekdays, 9pm weekends), which means there's flexibility around family schedules. Whether you're based at one of the nearby parks - Aldenham Country Park is the closest green space if you need a breather - or just in Elstree for a few days, this works best if climbing already appeals to you. It's not a rainy-day fallback attraction. But if someone in your group is keen on the sport, Arch North gives them proper walls and proper community. Worth the detour if that's your thing.
