Friars Wood

The woodland floor squelches underfoot even days after rain - that's the first thing you notice about Friars Wood. It's a proper working forest just east of Stevenage, all beech and oak with sections of younger conifers, and the paths wind through it without fuss or fanfare. No visitor centre, no cafe, no problem.

You'll spend a solid hour here if you tackle the main loop, maybe two if you're dawdling or want to explore the quieter corners where the canopy gets dense enough to feel genuinely enclosed. The trees are genuinely big, which changes how a woodland walks - you're not pushing through saplings, you're wandering through something with real presence. Bring a decent pair of boots though; it stays damp.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with small kids will find it manageable but there's not much to hold attention beyond the walk itself - no play equipment, no story markers, no dramatic views opening up. If you're staying at Ashridge Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road, though, it's perfect for burning off energy between longer days out. It's the sort of place you slot into the middle of a week rather than plan a trip around.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll need to find your own way in - no signage that I could spot. Head into the eastern edge of the wood near the A602 junction. Worth adding to a walk day with the wider Stevenage area, but don't expect woodland theatre. It's just solid, honest forest.
