Harmer's Bushes

The woodland around Harmer's Bushes, just east of Stevenage, is proper walking country - the sort of place where you can lose an afternoon without trying. It's not dramatic terrain, but it's genuinely pleasant: mature trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that actually feels rare in Hertfordshire. You won't find visitor facilities or marked trails in the traditional sense, which is either a plus or a minus depending on what you want.

For walkers it works well. The woodland is accessible enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find a full circuit a bit much - allow two to three hours if you're doing the proper loop. It's the sort of spot where you go for the walk itself rather than a destination view, which suits some people down to the ground and bores others within twenty minutes.

Historically there's stuff about the area worth knowing, but you'll need to do your homework beforehand as there's nothing on-site explaining it. It's free to access, obviously - it's a wood, not a theme park.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Church Farm Ardeley or Jacks Hill Caravans, Harmer's Bushes works as a morning or afternoon break. It's close enough to Stevenage to combine with a trip into town, or you could pair it with other local walks. Don't expect it to be a full day out on its own unless you're genuinely into long woodland rambles. For that, it's absolutely worth the drive.
