Friar's Stones

You'll find yourself standing in moorland that hasn't changed much in centuries, looking at a scatter of weathered stones that once formed part of a medieval structure. Friar's Stones, near Skipton, is one of those archaeological sites that rewards the walk more than the destination itself - you're out on proper Yorkshire moorland, the air sharp and clean, with views that stretch for miles.

What you're looking at are the remains of a building linked to monastic activity, though the exact history remains deliciously vague. The stones themselves are modest - this isn't Stonehenge - but there's something genuinely atmospheric about standing where people stood seven or eight hundred years ago. The real appeal lies in the walk itself. It's the kind of place where walkers and history types who like doing their own detective work will find value, but you need to be prepared for moorland terrain and changeable weather.

This works brilliantly as part of a broader Skipton area ramble. The nearest holiday base would be Breaks Fold Farm Glamping & Camping, just four and a half miles away, which gives you proper access to the surrounding countryside. Allow a couple of hours including the walk there and back, longer if you're doing wider moorland exploration.

It's free to visit, naturally - there's nothing to stop you wandering onto the moor. Go when the weather's forecast to be decent and you're already planning a day of walking. On its own, frankly, it's a bit underwhelming. As part of a larger expedition across the moors above Skipton, it's well worth the detour.
