Free Wood

The trees here are old enough that they've stopped showing off about it. Free Wood, just east of Royston, is one of those proper Essex woodlands that doesn't announce itself loudly - you simply wander in and find yourself surrounded by the kind of quiet that actually means something.

It's a straightforward woodland walk, nothing more dramatic than that. The paths are decent underfoot most of the time, though winter will test your wellies. You'll see standard broadleaf stuff - oak, ash, the usual suspects for East Anglia. No visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards telling you which birds might be about. Just trees and the occasional person walking a spaniel.

Walkers get the most from this. An hour here does the job nicely, though you can stretch it to two if you're genuinely dawdling. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment - it's not a destination in itself, more a decent diversion if you're in the area. Birdwatchers could occupy themselves, particularly in spring migration season.

The real value comes if you're based at nearby Pightle Farm Campsite. That's when Free Wood becomes your morning constitutional, your quick leg-stretch between proper activities. It's the sort of place that works best when you've got nowhere else to be that day - when being in woodland simply because you can is reason enough. Not essential Essex, but solid work.
