Foxholes Plantation

The woodland at Foxholes doesn't announce itself - you're just suddenly among tall conifers and the soft needle-carpet underfoot, somewhere between Bridport and the coast. It's a working plantation, so expect neat rows of managed forestry rather than wild ancient woodland, but that's actually its appeal. The paths are clear, relatively flat, and the trees create that proper cathedral-like quiet that makes you forget you're in Dorset for a moment.

Walkers will get the most from this one, particularly families who want something short and straightforward without the climbing. A couple of hours is plenty to wander through, spot birds, and let the kids burn off some energy. There's a meditative quality to conifer forests - less showy than a broadleaf woodland, but oddly restful.

You could easy combine it with a beach trip to Bridport or a proper walk along the Dorset coast path. Not a destination in itself, but genuinely worth a detour if you're staying locally and want woodland without the fuss. The lack of visitor infrastructure means it stays quiet, which is rather the point.
