Foxcovert Wood

A proper woodland walk through mixed deciduous forest, Foxcovert Wood sits just outside York and gives you the chance to stretch your legs without driving far. The paths wind through beech and oak, with enough ups and downs to keep things interesting without being exhausting - you're looking at around an hour for a decent loop if you don't dawdle. In spring the bluebells make it worth the trip; autumn's decent too when the light turns everything golden and the canopy thins out.

It's the sort of place families with restless kids will appreciate more than small toddlers - there's actual terrain to negotiate rather than flat pushchair routes. Walkers heading out from York should factor this in as a half-day detour; it pairs well with exploring the nearby glamping spots around Yapham if you're basing yourselves in the area. Wolds Glamping Pods and Shepherds Huts just down the road make logical sense if you want countryside sleep without pitching a tent yourself.

The wood's free and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be pretty fierce after rain. There's no visitor facility or café, so bring water. It's not dramatic or particularly rare - you won't see anything you can't find in half the woodlands across Yorkshire - but it's genuine, uncrowded, and honest. No Instagram bait, just trees doing their job. That's rather the point.
