Fox Hill West

The walk up Fox Hill West, just outside Guildford, rewards you with proper views across the Surrey Hills - the sort of outlook that makes the climb worthwhile on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak by any means, but it's accessible enough that you won't need technical kit or hours to spare.

The ascent takes about thirty minutes at a steady pace, and the terrain is mostly woodland path with the occasional steeper section. Once you're up there, the view south towards the Weald opens up nicely. Walkers will get the most from this one - it's not a destination in itself, more a good morning tick-off if you're staying in the area. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it without complaints, though very small legs might find it a slog.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so bring water. Free to access, naturally. The best light hits around late afternoon, which suits a post-lunch ramble.

If you're based at Chapel Farm Park or Wyldecrest Surrey Hills - both within 2.5 miles - Fox Hill West makes a solid addition to a day's walking rather than a standalone trip. Pair it with other walks in the Hills and you've got yourself a proper day out. Go on a weekday morning if you want the place to yourself; weekends see more traffic on the popular paths.
