Fox Fall Wood

The woodland walk through Fox Fall Wood, just outside Clitheroe, is one of those places that rewards you for leaving the car. It's proper forest - tall trees, a decent stream running through it, and enough peace to actually hear yourself think. The main attraction is the waterfall itself, though calling it dramatic would be generous. After decent rain it's worth the trip; in dry spells it's more of a gentle cascade than anything that'll make you gasp.

The walk takes about forty minutes there and back from the car park, through mixed woodland with some steep sections that'll get your legs working. It suits anyone who fancies a proper ramble without needing to bag a summit - families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the terrain. You'll see moss-covered rocks, ferns, and that damp woodland smell that makes you feel like you've actually escaped somewhere.

There's no admission charge and no obvious opening hours posted - it's essentially access woodland, which is both excellent and means you need to respect it. Go early if you can, especially at weekends, as parking is tight. Autumn's the best bet visually, when the canopy colours up and the water levels are higher.

If you're staying at Cross Lane Caravan Park or Beacon Fell View Holiday Park just down the road, this makes a solid half-day outing alongside exploring the Ribble Valley proper. It's not earth-shattering, but it's solid woodland time without the tourist crowds.
