Dense woodland stretches across the hillside just outside Clitheroe, offering proper countryside walking without the crowds you'll find at more famous Lancashire beauty spots. The paths wind through mixed deciduous trees - mainly oak and beech - with enough ups and downs to keep things interesting but nothing too challenging for families with older children.

Walkers who enjoy getting properly lost in the woods will love it here. The network of unmarked trails means you can easily spend two or three hours exploring, though do bring a map or phone with GPS as it's surprisingly easy to take a wrong turn. Dog owners have a field day - loads of space for four-legged friends to roam freely.

Best tackled in spring when the bluebells are out, or autumn for the leaf colours. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under the canopy, and winter turns the paths into proper mud baths.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like Pendle View or the Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's a decent afternoon's entertainment when you fancy a change from the more manicured walks around town. Not spectacular by any means, but a solid bit of woodland that does exactly what it says on the tin - gets you into nature without any fuss or entry fees.
