Deep woodland stretches along the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, where Fox Covert offers proper forest walking without the crowds you'll find elsewhere in North Yorkshire. The paths wind through mature deciduous trees - mainly oak and ash - with enough undergrowth to keep it feeling genuinely wild rather than manicured.

Walkers with a decent level of fitness will get the most from this spot. The terrain isn't challenging, but it's uneven enough to keep things interesting, and you'll want sturdy boots if it's been wet. Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will find it rewarding, though toddlers might struggle with the rougher sections.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - the mix of woodland and clearings attracts a good variety of species, particularly in early morning. The forest feels properly secluded, which is exactly what you want when escaping from a holiday park base.

From Pickering, it's an easy drive out, making it a solid choice if you're staying at Vale of Pickering Caravan Park or any of the closer spots like Maustin Park. Allow a good two hours to explore properly, longer if you're the type to stop and identify every bird call. Best visited in spring when the canopy is coming into leaf, or autumn when the colours are at their peak.
