Harding Plantation

There's something properly calming about wandering into Harding Plantation on the outskirts of Pickering. It's a working forest - managed woodland rather than some manicured nature reserve - with proper trails that meander through mixed trees without the twee signposting you'd get elsewhere. You'll find yourself on quiet paths where the main sound is boots on earth and branches overhead. The woodland feels lived-in, which is exactly what makes it work.

It's ideal for walkers after a proper stretch without needing to navigate moorland. Families won't find theme park theatrics, but children who can handle a mile or two on foot will enjoy the denser sections where the trees create natural little hideaways. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the mix of habitats tends to support decent variety. Photography types will appreciate the light filtering through the canopy, especially on overcast days when the grey skies don't blow out the greens.

The access situation is refreshingly straightforward - you can park up near Pickering and walk in without faffing about with visitor centres or pre-booking. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of. Allow an hour minimum, though you could easily spend half a day here if you're the type to dawdle and sit on logs. It's the sort of place that pairs nicely with a break at one of the caravan parks dotting the area - Black Bull is just over two miles away - as a decent morning's activity before heading into Pickering town itself for lunch. Not dramatic, but genuine.
