Fourteen Swallets #11

The walk down to Fourteen Swallets feels a bit like following a secret - the path cuts through woodland near Ruthin, and suddenly you're looking at a series of natural sinkholes where streams vanish underground into limestone. It's dramatic geology made visible, the kind of thing that stops you mid-stride.

What you're actually seeing are 14 separate shafts where water drains into underground cave systems. Some are fenced off for safety, but you can get close enough to peer down into the darkness and hear the water echoing below. The scale is genuinely impressive - these aren't little holes, they're proper caverns swallowing whole streams. Geology enthusiasts will find it fascinating; families with younger kids might spend 20 minutes maximum before moving on.

It's free to visit and takes about an hour to do properly - longer if you're really into cave formations and want to read up on the hydrology. The terrain is rough in places, so wear decent boots. Morning visits tend to be quieter, especially on weekends.
