Fourteen Swallets #1

There's a series of limestone sinkholes scattered across the hillside near Ruthin that locals call the Fourteen Swallets, though honestly counting them is half the puzzle. These aren't show caves with electric lights and gift shops - they're proper geological features where water vanishes underground, and the landscape tells you something real about how this part of Wales actually works.

You'll find them on the open moorland, and what makes them worth a visit is the walk itself as much as the holes. The terrain's rolling, the views back towards the Clwydian Range are solid, and there's something genuinely interesting about standing above a sinkhole and thinking about underground streams. Some are small depressions, others drop away more dramatically. It's the kind of thing that gets geologists properly animated.

This isn't a day out for everyone. If you're after caves you can actually enter and explore, you'll want to look elsewhere. But for walkers who like a bit of natural history and don't mind rough ground, it's worth the effort. The route from Ruthin takes you through proper moorland - good boots recommended, especially after rain when it gets boggy. Allow two to three hours depending on how many swallets you want to inspect.
