Fountain

There's a proper bit of history tucked away in Braintree that most visitors walk straight past - a fountain that's seen the town through centuries of change. It's the sort of thing that stops you mid-stride if you're paying attention, a physical reminder that this place was once somebody's pride and joy, built when fountains meant something beyond just decoration.

The fountain itself is modest by grand standards, but that's rather the point. Local history enthusiasts will recognise it as a marker of Braintree's industrial past - this was a town that mattered. You can stand here and imagine the bustle around it, the water running fresh when the town was far less tired than it might appear today. It doesn't demand hours of your time - twenty minutes is plenty to take it in properly, read any plaques, maybe snap a photo - but it gives you a genuine sense of place that many tourist attractions can't manufacture.

Staying at Stocks Farm Camping or Golden Grove Caravan Park puts you within easy reach, both sitting just a couple of miles out. If you're doing a circuit of Essex parks, Gosfield Lake Resort is your bigger option at 4.2 miles. The fountain works best as part of a Braintree wander rather than as a destination in itself. Free to view, obviously. Go when the light's decent - makes photographing it worthwhile and gives you better odds of seeing it as the town's older residents might have done.
