Foumart Wood

You'll know Foumart Wood by the dense canopy that swallows the light the moment you step in from the Aberdeenshire countryside around Banchory. It's proper woodland - the kind with a floor thick enough to muffle your footsteps and enough ancient trees to make you feel small.

This is a working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means it's free to explore and blissfully uncrowded. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent walking routes for anyone wanting to stretch their legs without serious hillwalking gear. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might struggle if there's mud after rain, which there often is in the Highlands.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to see what the wood offers without rushing. Spring brings bluebells, autumn gives proper colour, and winter walks here are atmospheric if you don't mind the damp. Summer's fine but midges can be brutal depending on the wind.

It sits nicely alongside Glen Dye Cabins and Cottages just up the road, so if you're staying in that area for a wider Deeside holiday, this works as a half-day outing. You're close enough to Royal Deeside's bigger attractions but Foumart Wood feels like the kind of place locals actually use rather than pass through. That's its appeal - honest woodland without the visitor centre faffery.
