Forty Hall Country Park

The River Lee cuts through flat Hertfordshire countryside here, and Forty Hall Country Park is where you'll find proper walking territory just beyond Waltham Cross. It's a working farm mixed with genuine countryside - the sort of place where locals actually spend their weekends rather than somewhere tourists have worn smooth.

The hall itself is 17th century and honestly worth a glance, but the real draw is the landscape. You get open grassland, woodland paths along the river, and if you time it right, decent birdwatching. The whole thing feels spacious without being manicured. There's enough here to occupy a family for two or three hours, though restless teenagers might get bored after one.

Walkers will appreciate the flat, easy routes - nothing demanding. History types will find the hall interesting rather than spectacular. Kids can run about on the grass without worrying too much. The riverside sections are genuinely pleasant, particularly in spring when things green up.

It's free to wander the grounds, which makes it good value. Combine it with a night at Theobalds Park just over a mile away, or Fowley Mead Park slightly further east, and you've got a proper weekend sorted. The area's not dramatic - it's gently rolling river country - but that's precisely why it works. Go mid-week if you can. Weekends get busier than you'd expect for somewhere so rural-feeling.
