Forge Dam Park

The dam itself is the main draw here - a proper Victorian engineering feat that's held water since 1864. You get a decent walk around the reservoir with views across to the moorland beyond, and on a clear day the whole thing feels rather peaceful despite being barely three miles from Sheffield city centre.

It's walkers and local nature spotters who get the most from Forge Dam. The path loops around the water, takes about an hour at a steady pace, and you'll spot waterfowl if you're quiet enough. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour - there's no playground or cafe, just the walk and the views. Birdwatchers should come in autumn when migrating species pass through.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though facilities are minimal. Best visited outside school holidays if you want any peace. The moorland setting means it can get windy and wet, so go when the weather's decent.

If you're camped at Fox Hagg Farm or Wyming Brook - both within easy striking distance - this makes a straightforward morning outing before heading into the Peak District proper. It's the sort of spot that rewards a return visit when you've got time to kill, rather than something you'd plan your whole trip around. The industrial heritage angle interests some, but honestly the landscape is what sells it.
