Fore Rigg Wood South

The woodland at Fore Rigg doesn't announce itself. You're driving through rolling Northumberland countryside near Alnwick, and suddenly there's a car park and a proper forest waiting to swallow you whole. It's the kind of place where the canopy gets thick enough that you stop checking your phone without noticing.

What you get here is straightforward - waymarked trails threading through mixed woodland, mostly beech and oak, with the sort of floor that's soft underfoot even in dry weather. The paths are well-maintained and manageable for families with decent shoes, though nothing taxing. If you're after a gentle hour's ramble rather than a strenuous hike, this fits the bill perfectly. Walkers who know the Cheviot Hills will find it a nice alternative when the weather's threatening or you want something less exposed.

It's free to access, and there's a small car park which fills up on weekends but rarely gets rammed. Early mornings are best if you want the wood to yourself. Allow an hour minimum, two if you're taking it slowly and actually looking at what's around you.

The real strength here is location. You're fifteen minutes from Alnwick, and the nearby caravan parks - River Breamish and Highburn House are both within a few miles - make this a solid addition to a Northumberland park holiday. It's not a destination in itself, but it's the kind of woods that make a family afternoon feel properly spent.
