Ford Hill

The climb up Ford Hill takes maybe twenty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, though the views from the top make it worth taking your time. You're looking out across the Wiltshire countryside from around 800 feet, which isn't dramatic by Alpine standards but it's proper pleasing on a clear day - you can pick out Chippenham in the distance and the rolling farmland just keeps going.

It's the sort of walk that works brilliantly for families who don't want a full afternoon expedition. Kids can manage it without complaint, and there's a real sense of achievement when you reach the summit. The path itself is straightforward, nothing technical, though it does get a bit muddy after rain.

Geographically you're well-positioned here if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan sites - Roe Deer Fields especially (it's got a 5.0 rating for good reason) is only about 5.6 miles away. The Moors Campsite at 4.8 miles is also solid if you prefer something slightly closer to Chippenham proper. Ford Hill makes a cracking morning jaunt before heading elsewhere, or a late afternoon stroll if the weather looks cooperative.

Walkers will find it straightforward but not thrilling. History buffs won't find much up there - it's really just about the walk and the view. That said, it's free, it's accessible, and it genuinely feels like proper countryside. Go if you're in the area and want to stretch your legs properly.
