Force Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a managed tourist trap, Force Wood sits just outside Holmrook and gives you real forest without the visitor centre faffing about. The trees are thick enough that even on a grey Cumbrian day you feel properly tucked away, and there's a stream running through that's worth following if you've got wellies on.

It's the sort of place where families with restless kids will get a decent hour out of it - no queue, no entry fee nonsense, just paths and woodland and the occasional bit of scrambling over roots. Don't expect dramatic waterfalls or rare plants. This is honest walking territory: muddy in places, dark in winter, but genuinely peaceful.

The real win here is how it pairs with Fisherground Campsite just down the road. You can do a morning walk while the campsite is settling in, shake off the stiffness from the car journey, and be back in time for a proper lunch. It's the kind of local spot that makes a holiday feel less like ticking off attractions and more like actually being somewhere.

Allow an hour for a comfortable wander, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle by the stream. Go when it's not raining if you can manage it - the drainage isn't brilliant and you'll spend more time scraping mud off trainers than enjoying the canopy.
