A proper working forest rather than a manicured country estate, Folds Plantation spreads across the Dumfries and Galloway hills just outside Castle Douglas. You're walking through commercial softwood - Forestry Commission land - which sounds industrial but feels anything but once you're beneath the canopy. The trails wind through dense conifers that block out most of the sky, creating that cool, quiet atmosphere you get in old forests, with the ground soft underfoot and not much growing except moss and the occasional patch of ferns. It's the kind of place where you notice birdsong properly for the first time in a week.

This works best for walkers who like a bit of solitude and don't need viewpoint selfies to justify the outing. Families with young kids will manage the easier paths, though there's not much to actually do once you're in there - no playground, no cafe, no interpretation boards. It's just forest. That's either the whole appeal or the whole problem, depending on who you are. Allow an hour minimum if you're doing more than a quick loop, longer if the mood takes you and the weather holds.

It fits neatly into a Dumfries and Galloway break, particularly if you're based at Loch Ken Holiday Park just over a mile away. Combine it with a walk along the loch itself, which offers proper views you won't get under the trees. Galloway Glamping, four miles south, is well-positioned for exploring this whole corner - the forest is accessible but not the main draw of the area. Go if you need to reset your head; skip it if you're after drama or activity.
