Foel Wyllt

The walk up Foel Wyllt from Tywyn is straightforward and rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay. It's not a beast of a climb - you're looking at around 600 metres elevation gain, manageable for most people in a couple of hours. The peak itself is bracken and grass, nothing fancy, but on a clear day you can see right across to the Llŷn Peninsula and down towards Aberdovey.

This is walkers' territory, the kind of hill that appeals to people who want fresh air and a decent vantage point without needing scrambling skills or special gear. Families with older kids will find it satisfying - short enough for a half-day excursion, long enough to feel like you've actually done something. Younger children might struggle with the length and the climb itself is steady rather than punchy.

There's no infrastructure on the mountain - no café, no facilities - so come prepared with water and snacks. The best light is morning or late afternoon when the shadows across the valley are worth the extra effort. Summer crowds it rarely. Winter can be boggy underfoot, so good boots matter.

If you're camping at Sunbeach or Cae Du nearby, or based at one of the parks around Tywyn, Foel Wyllt slots in nicely as a morning outing before heading to the coast. It's free and open year-round. Don't go expecting drama - go for the exercise, the quiet, and those bay views.
