Foel Offrwm

The walk up Foel Offrwm isn't a gentle stroll, but the effort pays off once you're standing on this modest peak above Dolgellau. It's the sort of mountain that doesn't announce itself - no dramatic ridges or alpine scrambles, just good honest Welsh fell-walking with proper views across the Cader Idris range when visibility cooperates.

You'll get the best of this on foot, starting from the lower slopes near town and allowing two to three hours for the round trip at a leisurely pace. The terrain can be boggy in places, so proper boots matter. On a clear day, the panorama justifies the climb - you're looking south across the Mawddach estuary and west towards the Snowdonia massif. On a drizzly afternoon (which is often), it's less romantic, but the cloud cover can be atmospheric in its own way.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the ascent a slog. Serious hikers will want to combine this with other peaks in the area for a fuller day out. It works particularly well if you're based at Llwyn yr Helm or Torrent Walk, both within easy striking distance - you can be up and down before lunch.

The real strength here is simplicity. No visitor centres, no queues, no faffing about. Just you, the hill, and whatever the Welsh weather decides to throw at you. That's either the appeal or the reason to skip it entirely, depending on your tolerance for proper fell-walking.
