Foel Cynwch

The walk up Foel Cynwch isn't long, but it punches well above its weight. Starting from near Dolgellau, you're looking at roughly an hour to the summit if you're moving at a decent pace - nothing that'll knacker you out, which is precisely why it works so well for a family afternoon or a quick leg-stretcher between camp activities.

Once you're up there, the views across the Cader Idris range stop you in your tracks. On a clear day you can see for miles across Snowdonia, and the sense of perspective is genuinely lovely - you've climbed something that feels proper mountainous without needing technical gear or spending half the day on it. The path is straightforward enough, though it does get steep towards the end and can be boggy after rain.

Walkers will find this far more satisfying than a stroll round a park, though it's nothing like the slog of tackling Cader Idris itself. Families with reasonably active kids will manage fine. The real appeal is the reward-to-effort ratio: you get mountain air, real views, and genuine accomplishment without the drama.

If you're camped at Torrent Walk or Llwyn yr Helm, both close by, this makes a cracking half-day adventure. It breaks up a park holiday nicely without requiring a full expedition mentality. Go midweek if you can - weekends draw a steady trickle of locals who know it's worth the effort.
