Flat Wood

A quiet pocket of woodland south of Godalming, Flat Wood is exactly what its name suggests - no drama, no elevation gain, just a straightforward wander through proper Surrey forest. The trees are dense enough to feel properly removed from the A3, and the ground is soft underfoot with the kind of woodland floor you only find where conifers have been growing for decades.

It's ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Little Cowdray Farm or Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat and fancy a low-key morning walk. The terrain suits families with younger kids and anyone who wants to move without sweating - a solid two-hour outing without the scrambling or steep climbs that bog down other Surrey woodland trails. Dog walkers seem to use it regularly, and there's a genuine sense that locals guard it as their quiet spot rather than any kind of showpiece.

I'd be honest though: Flat Wood doesn't give you views, a destination tearoom, or photo opportunities that'll matter. It's purely about the walk itself - the sound of the forest, the smell of leaf mould, the occasional shaft of light. That'll either appeal to you enormously or leave you cold after thirty minutes. For a day of serious hiking, combine it with the more dramatic terrain around Witley Common or the riverside paths nearer Godalming. But if you want to slip into the trees without faffing about with route-planning, it does the job. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared.
