Five Wells

Stone circles don't get much more atmospheric than this Bronze Age monument perched on the moors above Buxton. Five Wells - despite the name, it's actually a chambered tomb dating back around 4,000 years - offers one of the Peak District's most rewarding short walks for anyone with an interest in ancient Britain.

The trek up from the nearest parking spot takes about 20 minutes across open moorland, but the views alone justify the effort. On a clear day you can see for miles across the White Peak, with the limestone plateau stretching endlessly in all directions. History buffs will appreciate the well-preserved stone chamber, while families might find the walk a bit much for very small children - the terrain's uneven and there's no defined path for the final approach.

What makes this site special is its isolation. Unlike Stonehenge or other famous monuments, you'll often have the place entirely to yourself. The sense of connection to our prehistoric ancestors feels genuine here, not stage-managed.

Pack a thermos - the moorland wind has proper bite even in summer. Allow two hours total including the walk, and check the weather before setting out.
