Chelmorton Low

Standing at 1,509 feet, this limestone hill offers proper Peak District views without the crowds that swarm Kinder Scout. The summit sits just west of Buxton, making it an easy detour if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Beech Croft Farm or Knotlow Farm.

Walkers will find the ascent straightforward - it's more of a steady plod than a proper climb. The reward comes at the top where you'll get sweeping views across the White Peak's rolling limestone plateau. On a clear day, you can spot the distinctive profile of Shutlingsloe to the west.

Families with older children should manage this fine, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. Allow about two hours for the round trip from the nearest parking. The terrain can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

Honestly, it's not the most dramatic peak in the area - Mam Tor has better views and Chrome Hill is far more interesting. But if you're based at one of the holiday parks near Buxton and want a decent leg-stretch without driving miles, Chelmorton Low does the job. The surrounding countryside is lovely, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself outside weekend afternoons.
