Five Lamps

The Five Lamps stand just outside Boston like a forgotten Victorian monument to civic pride. These cast iron streetlights, dating back to the 1880s, mark where five roads converge on the edge of town - a bit of a strange thing to get excited about until you realise they're actually rather fine pieces of engineering. Each lamp still has its original metalwork, ornate and blackened by weather and time.

Historically minded visitors will find them worth a quick detour to photograph and understand how Boston once marked its boundaries. They're not going to keep you for hours - ten minutes tops - but they tell a genuine story about Victorian infrastructure and town planning. The spot itself is fairly ordinary, ringed by roads and modern development, so don't expect a scenic viewpoint.

Family visits work well if you're already in Boston doing something else, or if kids are interested in how street furniture has changed over two centuries. Walkers heading out from the town centre might pass them as part of a larger exploration of the surrounding countryside.

Being free and always accessible, they slot neatly into a holiday itinerary around Orchard Holiday Park or Appletree Holiday Park, both just a few miles away. If you're staying at Big Sky Hideaway Camping further out, they're worth stopping for on the drive into Boston proper. Don't go out of your way specially, but if you're in the area, they're a genuine bit of local character worth five minutes of your time.
