Fittleworth Church

The churchyard sits quietly off the main road through Fittleworth, a few minutes' drive south of Pulborough. St. Margaret's is what you'd call a proper village church - medieval bones, whitewashed walls, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Inside, there's a lovely 13th-century chancel and some decent Victorian restoration work that didn't ruin the character. The font's worth a look, and the windows do their job without being showy about it.

If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just enjoy wandering through old churches without the crowds you'd get at somewhere famous, you'll find an hour here well spent. Families with younger children might lose interest after ten minutes, but older kids interested in history will get something from it. The churchyard itself is peaceful - good for a quiet sit-down and looking at the gravestones if you're that way inclined.

Being free to enter and open during daylight hours makes it an easy add-on to a local park holiday. It's barely out of your way if you're staying at Wakestone and Wild Glamping or any of the other sites dotted around - Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Woodfire at Westerlands are both within easy reach. On a sunny afternoon, you could easily combine it with a walk along the nearby footpaths, then head into Pulborough for a proper lunch. Nothing fancy, but worth the detour if you've got a day to fill.
