Fir Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Fir Copse is the sort of place you stumble upon when exploring the Gloucestershire countryside around Swindon. It's dense, quiet, and genuinely feels removed from the world despite being just outside town - which is rare. The trees are tall and close together, creating that cathedral-like gloom you get in old forests. There's a real sense of walking through somewhere that's been left alone.

It works best for walkers who like solitude and aren't after dramatic vistas. You won't find visitor facilities or waymarked trails - this is woodland as you find it. A solid hour will cover the main paths, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type to pause and listen. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're keen on spotting wildlife.

The real appeal comes when you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Great Farm (3.8 miles away, and genuinely excellent for a weekend), and you need a quick escape on foot. It fills an afternoon nicely alongside exploring the broader Gloucestershire walking routes. Go early to avoid the odd dog-walker, and expect muddy ground after rain - it's a proper forest, not a manicured park.

Access appears to be free and there are no formal opening hours, which means you get genuine forest peace rather than managed experience.
