About Fintry, Motte

A grassy mound rising abruptly from flat farmland near Glasgow - that's Fintry Motte, and it's one of those archaeological sites that rewards you for bothering to find it. Built in the 12th century as a Norman stronghold, what remains is essentially a steep-sided earthwork topped with a flattened platform where wooden fortifications once stood. You won't find much interpretation on site, but the walk up is quick and the views across Stirlingshire farmland are genuine.
