Filey Sands

Five miles of golden sand stretch north from Filey's seafront, forming one of Yorkshire's most reliable family beaches. The sand here is proper stuff - fine enough for decent sandcastles but firm enough for long walks without sinking to your ankles.

Families absolutely love it. The beach slopes gently into the sea, making it safe for children, and there's enough space that you'll never feel cramped even on busy summer days. Rock pools appear at low tide near Filey Brigg, the rocky headland that bookends the southern stretch.

Dog walkers get a good deal here too. The northern section allows dogs year-round, while the main family area restricts them during peak summer months. Early morning walks reveal just how vast this coastline feels when you've got it mostly to yourself.

Parking can be tricky in Filey itself during school holidays, but it's worth persevering. The promenade has the usual seaside amenities - cafes, toilets, and places to buy buckets and spades.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. Haven's Primrose Valley and Blue Dolphin are both within easy reach, as is Parkdean's Cayton Bay site. Having a beach this good on your doorstep transforms any Yorkshire coast break from decent to properly memorable.
