Filey Brigg Country Park

The rocky headland at Filey Brigg juts out into the North Sea like a finger pointing accusingly at the horizon. It's a proper working nature reserve, not some manicured visitor attraction with gift shops and themed play areas. What you get instead is genuine coastal habitat - cliffs, grassland, and that particular kind of windswept Yorkshire wildness that either appeals to you immediately or doesn't.

Birders come here obsessively during migration seasons to spot warblers and passing seabirds. The rock pools at low tide keep kids occupied for longer than you'd expect, turning over stones to find crabs and anemones. The cliff-top walk itself is short but dramatic, with views across to Scarborough in one direction and empty coastline the other way. On a clear day it's properly excellent; on a grey one, it's moody in that very British sense.

You'll want an hour minimum if you're just poking about, longer if you're serious about bird spotting or rock pooling. It's free and always open - no gates, no closing times. The wind can be relentless, so bring layers even when it looks calm from the car park. If you're staying at any of the holiday parks nearby - Centenary Way and Primrose Valley are close enough for an easy morning trip - this beats another afternoon at the arcade. It's not a destination in itself, but combined with Filey's seafront and the bigger Scarborough attractions just down the coast, it rounds out a coastal break rather well.
