Ffrith Lake

The water here is still, dark, and ringed by conifer woodland that makes you feel properly removed from the world despite being only a few miles from Rhyl's seaside chaos. Ffrith Lake sits in the hills above Conwy, a reservoir that's been there long enough that most people forget it exists at all.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination attraction. There's a decent path that loops the perimeter - takes roughly an hour depending on your pace and how many times you stop to stare at the water. The scenery's genuine Welsh countryside, all green slopes and dark pines, nothing manicured about it. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the place attracts proper birdwatchers. Families with young kids might find it a touch underwhelming - there's no playground, no cafe, no visitor infrastructure. But teenagers who aren't fussed about screaming rides will appreciate the quiet.

Free to visit, obviously. Go mid-week if you want solitude, though even on weekends it's never rammed. An hour minimum, but you could comfortably stretch it to two if you're genuinely enjoying the walk rather than just clocking it off.

Pairs well with a stay at Parkdean Resorts Ty Mawr Holiday Park up the road. It's the kind of morning walk you'd do before heading to the coast, or late afternoon when you can't be bothered with driving anywhere touristy. Unpretentious. Just a lake and some woods.
