About Ferrand's Folly

Stone steps wind up through woodland to reach this Grade II listed tower perched on the hillside above Bingley. Built in 1880 as a memorial to Dr James Ferrand, the 60-foot Gothic Revival structure serves no practical purpose whatsoever - hence the 'folly' name. The climb takes about 20 minutes from the town centre, following well-marked footpaths through increasingly steep terrain.

History buffs will appreciate the Victorian engineering and the story behind its construction, while walkers get rewarded with decent views across the Aire Valley once you reach the top. The tower itself is usually locked, so you're admiring it from the outside rather than climbing up inside.

Families with older children will manage the walk fine, though it's probably too much for little ones with short legs. There's no visitor centre or facilities up there - just the monument and some benches. Allow an hour round trip from Bingley town centre, longer if you want to sit and enjoy the outlook.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Harden & Bingley Park or venturing to the Bronte Country area, it makes a pleasant morning excursion. Worth combining with a wander around Bingley's historic centre afterwards, but don't expect to spend more than an hour at the folly itself.
