It's a real peak, not a gentle hill - the climb is genuine and the landscape does open up once you're up there, revealing the kind of wide moorland vistas that make you remember why you bothered with the boots.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll for families with young children, but older kids who can handle a decent ascent will find it satisfying. History buffs won't find much to linger over - this is about the walking and the view, not archaeological remains or stone circles. Allow a couple of hours minimum, depending on fitness and whether you fancy lounging about at the top with a flask.

Based near Carnforth, you're well placed if you're stopping at one of the local campsites - Philpin Farm is practically on your doorstep at under a mile away, whilst the various glamping pods and larger parks within a handful of miles give you decent options for a base. The fell works well alongside exploring the wider Yorkshire landscape, though Fenwick Lot itself is more about the physical achievement than the destination. Go on a clear day or don't bother - low cloud renders the whole experience rather pointless.
